{An impressive early entry for the Cornwall Chess Casual Name-dropping and
Oneupmanship prize. "In July 2006 I attended the Camping La Rochade
International wine open in France where I won the grading prize (a huge bottle
of superior wine). During the event I was fortunate enough to meet GM Alexei
Shirov, and after a few drinks on a hot summer's evening he offered to play me
a game of chess. After I forced a few more glasses of wine down his neck,
play commenced. I had a BCF grade of 96 and he had a FIDE rating of 2709
(quite a difference!) He had 2 minutes on the clock and I had 1 hour! After he
thrashed me in 23 moves he still had over 1 minute remaining. Although not
annotated, it is interesting to see the difference between the moves of a
novice's and a tipsy Grandmaster's in rapidplay mode. I played the exchange
variation of the Polish opening, hoping to win a rook, ha-ha!" (Barry Childs).
