{Analysing the games of the old champions we notice that archaic technical methods have been slowly replaced by more sophisticated approaches. This process always takes a long time, and today even a club player can't help smiling when confronted with some of the primitive tricks that led to success in the great games of the past. Every chess epoch had its visionary contributors to the theory of our ancient game, but only the greatest champions were able to jump through the generations, demonstrating ideas that were far ahead of their time. Nc3 d5 4. Qb3 dxc4 5. Qxc4 Bg7 6. Bf4 c6 7. Rd1 Qa5 8. Bd2 b5 9. Qb3 b4 10. Na4 Na6 11. e3 Be6 12. Naturally Alekhine was aware of these factors, but he was betting on the hidden dynamism of Black's position. The complexity of comparing positional qualities and tactical potential makes it very difficult, even for the strongest players, to evaluate the risk they are undertaking. But the readiness to remain at the cutting edge can be amply rewarded if the opponent misses the crucial moment of the explosion! {The Dutch enigma Max Euwe (1901 - 1985, World Champion 1935 - 1937) was always underestimated by the chess world - except possibly in his native Holland. He was never keen to join the club of professional players and preferred to make his living through the less ambitious but more stable job of professor of mathematics. His chess talent became evident at quite an early age, but by staying inside amateur circles he excluded himself from the list of serious candidates for the World Championship title. Apart from that, how could anyone launch a real challenge without impressive tournament victories? That is why when Euwe eventually decided to give it a try this was greeted sceptically by the chess public. In view of Alekhine's magnificent results in the early thirties nobody could believe that the Dutchman could assume anything but cannon fodder for the champion. Alekhine obviously shared this categorical point of view, although Euwe did usually get exceptionally good results against one player - Alexander Alekhine. A first match, played in 1927, just before Alekhine's triumph over Capablanca, ended with a very modest advantage for the Russian - 5.5:4.5 (+3, -2, =5) - after Alekhine hoodwinked his opponent in the very suspicious 10th game. Their tournament encounters also didn't convincingly prove Alekhine's superiority. Only in the rematch in 1937, with the help of scrupulous preparation, was Alekhine at last able to solve the Dutch enigma. This phenomenon has in fact a rational explanation. Euwe was the first player to study openings with scientific precision. His repertoire was designed to prevent Alekhine from unfolding his best chess qualities. If you add Euwe's talent for precise calculation, his sense of initiative plus his outstanding nervous constitution, you can see where Alekhine's problems came from. Forced to play without the initiative, the Russian made many mistakes, mainly due to psychological impatience. Two years after losing his title to Euwe, when he won the rematch, everyone assumed that the result of the first match was purely due to bad form and a casual approach on the part of Alekhine. But I personally think that these factors had little to do with the outcome. One year before, in 1934, Alekhine played quite a poor match against Bogoljubov, but the final score did not reflect the quality of the chess played: 15.5:10.5! After all Alekhine in poor form was still Alekhine! In his first challenge match Euwe, after a disastrous start (+1, -4, =2), was desperately trying to catch up, but Alekhine was able to maintain his lead. Before the following game the score was 10.5:8.5. Euwe badly needed another win to stay in the match, which was scheduled for 30 games with a tie favouring the reigning champion. Nf3 Nf6 4.
