1. d4 {First round of the HCA Major I was paired against the current champion
and top seed with Black. I was feeling positive as I had been on holiday all
week, so was coming into the game fresh.} Nf6 2. Nf3 g6 3. g3 Bg7 4. Bg2 O-O 5.
O-O d6 6. c4 Nc6 {This was where I had a bit of a think, as was not sure if d5
would drive my Knight offside for a while.} 7. Nc3 {But Joe played this pretty
instantly, so seemed he knew the main line better than me.} (7. d5 Na5 8. Nfd2
c5) 7... e5 8. d5 Ne7 9. e4 {Where to put the Knight d7 or e8, something I
have spent a long time on in the King's Indian! This time I decided on e8.} Ne8
10. Qc2 $6 {This does not look to be the best square for the Queen, but after
playing e8 my plan is fairly straight forward. To play f5 and try to attack
the King.} (10. Ne1 f5) 10... f5 11. Nd2 f4 {Probably a bit premature?} (11...
Nf6) 12. f3 {I was happy after this. I was sure Joe wanted to close the King
side.} g5 {Keep pushing the pawns!} 13. g4 h5 (13... Ng6 {Maybe this is a bit
more accurate.}) 14. h3 (14. gxh5 Nf6 {I would be very happy if White opened
up his g file.}) 14... hxg4 (14... Ng6 15. b3 Nh4 16. Rf2 Nf6) 15. hxg4 Ng6 16.
b4 {White makes the thematic b4 break. At this stage I had taken more time
than Joe, but I was happy with my position. I had an open file and Bxg4 after
Nf6 will be a constant threat. Also Qf6 swinging over to the H file is a line
I was looking at.} Nh4 17. Ba3 Nf6 18. Qd1 {The Queen moves back to d1,
although the Qc2 was a few moves back, this validated that maybe it was not
the best move?} Bd7 {This was a important move. Black has a nice position, but
how to continue? My thoughts were this develops the Bishop and protects the e8
to a4 diagonal and maybe Qc8 is a threat building up pressure on g4?} 19. Bh3 {
White overprotects g4, but not the best use for the white squared bishop.} (19.
c5 {Is a better move, after which I was probably going to play Qc8 although
the threats on g4 are not really real.} Qc8 20. Qe2 b5 (20... Bxg4 21. fxg4
Nxg2 22. Qxg2 Nxg4 23. Nc4 $16)) 19... Nh5 $1 {A bit flashy, but the best move.
} 20. Kf2 $2 (20. Rf2) ({Taking the Knight leads to a very bad position, White
probably has to offer the Rook up or try to survive the attack.} 20. gxh5 Bxh3
21. Rf2 (21. Kf2 g4 22. Rg1 Qg5 23. Ke2 Qxh5) 21... g4) 20... Ng3 $17 {A great
Knight on g3 and the one on h4 is pretty good too.} 21. Rg1 c6 $3 {Can't say I
saw all the complications with this move, but opening up another diagonal to
attack seemed best.} 22. c5 dxc5 23. bxc5 Qa5 $2 {This is not a bad move, but
I missed the continuation by Joe after this.} 24. Qb3 $17 Rf6 {Not the best,
but worked out well.} (24... cxd5 25. Bb4 Qa6 26. Bf1 {and I have to give up
my lovely Knight.} Nxf1 27. Raxf1 $15) 25. Nc4 {White cannot take the pawn as
Black just takes the Knight, sacs the rook and mate will follow. I had not
calculated the mate, but could see White's position was crumbling with so many
pieces being attacked.} (25. Qxb7 Qxc3 26. Qxa8+ Bf8 {And White has to take
the Queen.} 27. Qxf8+ Rxf8 28. Rxg3 Qe3+ 29. Kf1 fxg3 30. dxc6 Qf2#) 25... Qa6
26. Nxe5 $4 {Looked good, but huge blunder. Joe now took 20 to 25 minutes
trying to find a good move after Rh6.} (26. Bf1 Kh7 (26... Nxf1 27. Raxf1 Rh6
28. Ke1 b6)) 26... Rh6 $1 (26... Rf7 {Also works, but Rh6 is the more natural
move.}) 27. Bf1 {the best move.} (27. Nxd7 {Taking the Bishop leads to a mate
with Bd4, which is better than Bxc3. I was pleased to see this combination
when quite short of time, but initially I only saw Bxc3 and only improved to
the mate when looking at the board whilst Joe was thinking.} Bd4+ (27... Bxc3
28. dxc6+ Kh7 29. Bf1) 28. Ke1 Bxc3+ 29. Kd1 Qd3+ 30. Kc1 Ne2#) 27... Nxf1 $1 {
Now I have to take the Bishop but my King's Indian Bishop has suddenly turned
into a monster.} 28. dxc6+ {Allowing the capture with the discovered check is
no good.} Be6 $19 {Lots of pieces on en prise!} 29. cxb7 (29. Qxb7 Qxa3 30.

Kd2 (35. Kd1 Rb1+) 35... Be3+) 32. Raxf1 Rxb7 (32... Bd4+ {is a lot better,
but I did not want White to play c6 at any stage.} 33. Ke2 Bc4+ 34. Ke1) 33.
Rh1 Bd4+ {White is just losing a lot of pieces.} 34. Ke2 Bc4+ 35. Ke1 Rb1+ 36.
Kd2 Rxf1 (36... Nxf3+ 37. Rxf3 Rbxh1) 37. Rxf1 Bxf1 38. Nc3 Nxf3+ {And Joe's
flag fell in lost positon, I am not 100% sure of final moves. All in all a
game I was very pleased with, but did not consider enterting for the best
prize game as I was sure one of the Open players would have a better game. But
in the end I was encouraged to enter and I am pleased I did. Maybe not the
most accurate of games, but there were some nice moves and I think players who
play the King's Indian Defence will appreciate it. As for the rest of the
tournament, the less said the better!} 0-1
