1. e4 c5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. f4 {This made me smile. Whenever I play against the aggressive Sicilian Closed Grand Prix Attack, I feel my opponent is coming for me.} e6 4. Nf3 a6 {I'm not too booked up on this line, but I have time to prevent White's Bishop going to b5.} 5. Be2 Nd4 6. O-O Ne7 7. d3 Nec6 8. Be3 {I could play d7-d5 straight away, but I thought} Be7 {was more accurate and prepares castling to safety.} 9. Kh1 {I was thinking John Sharp is really coming for my head with his last move. I anticipated g2-g4 at some point for a full on Kingside attack.} d5 {I was happy to get the thematic d7-d5 move in the Sicilian.} 10. Bf2 b5 11. a3 Bb7 {This is also preparing for long term counter-attacking ideas.} 12. exd5 exd5 13. Nxd4 cxd4 {I just wanted to chase his Knight away from c3.} 14. Nb1 O-O 15. Nd2 Re8 16. Nb3 {I was impressed by White's playing what I felt was the best continuation and making me uncomfortable.} Bf6 17. Bf3 Qd6 18. g3 {I felt I had a small edge but was stuck on how to improve and was stuck for a long time. I played} g6 {to give breathing room for my King or dark squared Bishop.} 19. Re1 Bg7 20. Rxe8+ Rxe8 21. Qg1 ({To be honest, I was expecting} 21. Qd2 {and I did not see that White could go after my d4-pawn with his 21st move.}) 21... Qf6 {With my last move, I'm hanging the d5-pawn.} 22. Re1 ({If} 22. Bxd5 {then} Re2 {and White's Rook is underdeveloped.}) 22... Rd8 23. Qg2 {White attacks the d5-pawn for a second time, but I was always prepared sacrifice it.} Bf8 24. h4 ({We both saw that if} 24. Bxd5 $2 Rxd5 25. Qxd5 $4 Nd8 $3 {captures the Queen.}) 24... a5 25. Kh2 a4 26. Nc1 {This is a very unhappy White Knight that has been kicked around and abused.} Ne7 {My Knight in contrast is very happy. Nothing can stop him getting to f5.} 27. Qg1 Nf5 28. b4 Rc8 29. Bd1 Bg7 30. Ne2 Re8 31. Nc1 Rc8 {Notice the subtle difference. My dark squared Bishop is now back on g7. My d4-pawn is now sufficiently guarded, and the Rook move back to c8 is my trying to improve my position. Not in a million years was I playing for a draw.} 32. Na2 ({Both of us saw the Black Knight sacrifice} 32. Z0 $140 Nxh4 33. gxh4 Qxf4+ {capturing the Knight on c1. But before playing this tactic, my Bishop had to be back on g7.}) 32... h5 {trying to prevent g3-g4.} 33. Re2 Bc6 {This strange looking move was to improve my Bishop to the better d7-square.} 34. Be1 {White wants to play the c2-c3 pawn break.} Ne3 $1 {My plan is to get Bd7 and eventually Qf5.} (34... Bd7 $1 {Is also strong.}) 35. Bd2 Nxd1 {I thought that even though White's light squared Bishop was bad, my attack was going to work better without it.} 36. Qxd1 Bd7 37. Qb1 Qf5 $1 {Mission accomplished. At this point, I knew I was winning.} 38. Be1 Qg4 {I was trying to induce a blunder by attacking the Rook and see if he chose a bad square to make his position worse.} 39. Nc1 $2 ({I thought} 39. Rg2 {was the only move.}) 39... Bf6 {Improving my Bishop and prepare for any sacrifice on h4. I was now in time trouble.} 40. Qb2 {Still trying to gang up on my d4-pawn.} Kh7 {At least if I have to sacrifce the d4-pawn, he's not taking with a check.} 41. Kg2 Qh3+ ({In my time trouble, I missed the following.} 41... Bxh4 42. Qxd4 Qh3+ 43. Kg1 Bxg3) 42. Kg1 Qg4 43. Bf2 Rc3 44. Be1 Qf3 45. Kh2 Qf1 {And White lost on time, but Black was clearly winning after Bg4.} 0-1
