1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 {He surprised me with} 3. e5 {though I think Nimzowitsch and even players dating back to Steinitz favoured this move.} c5 4. Nf3 Nc6 5. Bd3 Nxd4 6. Nxd4 cxd4 {Frankly I had no idea of his plan, but I thought that grabbing a pawn and exchanging a piece or two seemed like a good idea.} 7. O-O Ne7 8. a3 {again he surprised me, but I guess he knew what he was up to.} Qc7 9. Re1 Bd7 10. b4 Nc6 {which you will notice, attacks e5 again.} 11. Bf4 a6 {to try and keep the Black Knight unattacked.} 12. Nd2 Be7 13. Qg4 {Suddenly I saw a Black reply, that I could hardly believe. But when a top player gives you a chance, what can you do?} g5 $1 {The White Knight on d2 blocked the Bishops path to retreat.} 14. Bxg5 ({If} 14. Bg3 {then Black's reply} h5 {is very strong.}) 14... Rg8 15. Nf3 h6 16. Bh7 Rg7 17. Qh5 hxg5 18. Qh6 Bf8 19. Nxg5 {this enabled me to play} Nxe5 20. Qh5 Ng6 {He had a very long think and then played} 21. g3 Qd8 {with the idea of giving support to the pieces by getting the Queen to the Kingside.} ({I had a choice of moves. I could play} 21... Be7 22. Qh6 Bf6) ({The other more obvious move was to castle Queenside} 21... O-O-O {but under stress in the game, I didn't dare do that.}) 22. f4 Qf6 {then he surprised me with} 23. f5 {I think had he played a quieter move, then Black could have castled Queenside.} Ne5 24. fxe6 Rxg5 25. exd7+ Kxd7 26. Qh3+ Kc7 {I think I was relieved that my King had moved from Kingside danger and pieces were now freed up. But he did surprise me with his next move.} 27. Re2 ({I was expecting} 27. Rf1 {attacking the Queen.}) {This allowed a very nasty blow from Black by} 27... d3 28. cxd3 ({If he had played} 28. Rf1 {Black can play} dxe2) 28... Nf3+ 29. Kg2 Qxa1 30. Rc2+ Kb6 31. Kxf3 {And he had enough and resigned.} 0-1
