I can remember having one of the little plastic travel sets that were common at the time and playing at break times in junior school. I moved up to Luton Grammar school in 1963 where they had a proper chess club and played matches against other schools in Luton. We had a new Maths teacher when I move to the VIth Form College in 1968 and he encouraged me to join Luton chess Club. That came as a bit of a shock as I played top board in the VIth Form College team and suddenly found there were many players who were very much better than me. I played in the Manchester League when at University not playing in my final year to make sure I passed my exams. I rejoined Luton Chess Club in 1973 playing in the Bedfordshire league in the 1973/1974 season. I started in Luton’s G team, as I had lost my grading by not playing for over a year, playing my final match of the season at the bottom of the A team. In 1994 after Luton Chess Club had joined with Kent’s Chess Club to form the Kents Luton Chess Club, I played in he club championship and reached the final play off. This was the game for the trophy.} 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. Bg5 Bg7 5. Be2 O-O 6. Qd2 e5 7. d5 Nbd7 8. h4 Nc5 9. f3 h5 10. Nh3 Bxh3 11. Rxh3 Qd7 12. O-O-O a6 13. Bxf6 Bxf6 14. g4 Kh7 15.
