{Notes by the winner. Michael Franklin was a 200 plus player so I was
interested to know what he would play against my dubious but fun Blackmar
Diemer Gambit (if given the chance).} 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5 3. e4 dxe4 4. f3 exf3
5. Nxf3 Bf5 {This is known as the Gunderam Defence and is popular. It has a
good reputation but not sure if this is the most testing response although the
play can potentially become quite sharp.} 6. Ne5 e6 7. g4 Bg6 8. g5 $6 (8. Qf3
$1 {is the more accurate move (played in 70% of games) as it encourage Back to
play} c6 {The move order played gives Black more flexibility but often the
position transposes.}) 8... Nd5 9. Qf3 c6 $6 {Although the most popular move,
I am always pleased to see it as it is a bit passive.} 10. Bd3 Nd7 {This move
m akes a lot of sense, The golden rule for White is to take the bishop when
the knight on e5 is threatened.} 11. Nxg6 hxg6 12. O-O f5 $2 {Think this is a
mistake as the g6 pawn is too weak and White maintains his attack.} (12... Qe7
{is the main but unnatural alternative (as it blocks the f8 bishop). However,
after} 13. Nxd5 cxd5 14. Be3 {it is clear White is well on top as Black is in
a vice and the f-pawn is likely to fall unless Black plays f5 when the g-pawn
will crash and burn!}) 13. gxf6 gxf6 $2 {Unfortunately for my opponent this
understandable move loses immediately!} (13... Qxf6 {looks strongest to at
least try and swap queens if White is to win the g-pawn but after} 14. Qe4 {
there is no good square for Black's queen (and the g-pawn is dropping anyway).}
) 14. Bxg6+ Ke7 15. Nxd5+ $1 {Black resigns. If} cxd5 ({If} 15... exd5 {
White has a plethora of good moves but} 16. Bg5 fxg5 17. Qe3+ Kd6 18. Qg3+ Ke7
19. Rae1+ Ne5 20. Qxe5+ Kd7 21. Bf5#) 16. Qa3+ {wins!} 1-0
